How do study sessions work?
Updated
A study session is a set of SAT questions on a topic that you answer one at a time, with feedback on every answer. Your study plan schedules sessions for you, and you can start your own on any topic.
Each finished session updates your mastery and score estimate, which shape what your plan gives you next. See How is my study plan built?
Plan sessions and your own
- Plan sessions are on Home under Study plan priorities and on Study Plan. They count toward your plan completion, toward unlocking your predicted score and, when marked Challenge, toward the Lock-In Challenge.
- Sessions you start yourself count toward your mastery and score estimate, but not toward plan completion or the challenge. Click Study Session under Study plan priorities, pick one or more topics, a difficulty and 5 to 60 questions, then click Start session.
Choose a difficulty
Adaptive, the default, adjusts the difficulty as you go, based on how you answer. Easy, Medium and Hard keep every question at that level.
- Not sure? Pick Adaptive. It keeps you working near your level.
- New to a skill? Start with Easy or Medium to learn the patterns.
- Getting most Medium questions right? Move to Hard. A top score needs hard questions right.
Plan sessions start at the level your plan picks. To switch, use the difficulty menu at the top before you check the question.
The Game Plan
A session of more than 5 questions opens with a Game Plan from the AI tutor in the chat: how you've done on the topic, the mistake to watch for and what to do on each question. Read it, then click Start Session. It doesn't use your AI tutor messages.
Answer and Check
- Choose an answer, or type it for a grid-in question, and click Check.
- If you're right, the explanation opens. If not, a hint appears in the chat, and you can try again or click Reveal answer.
- Click Next for the next question.
Only your first Check counts. That first answer goes into your accuracy, mastery and score estimate. Trying again helps you learn, but a right answer on the second try still counts as a miss.
Questions you miss go into your Error Log, and the bookmark icon at the top saves any question for later. Review Labs replay both. See Use the Error Log, bookmarks and collections.
On the Free and Essential plans, each question you check uses 1 question from your allowance. See Free plan limits.
Get help when you're stuck
The chat beside the question has hints, Strategy, Explain step-by-step and, on some Math questions, a Desmos tip, and you can ask the AI tutor about the question. After you answer, the explanation shows why each choice is right or wrong. See Get help when you're stuck on a question.
Leave and come back
Click X at the top right whenever you need to. Every answer you've checked is saved, and the session picks up where you left off. To find it again:
- On Home, Study plan priorities lists the task you worked on last, marked Continue when it isn't already in the list.
- On Study Plan, every session sits on its day. A session you start yourself sits on the day you started it.
If you've used your questions for the week or month, an unfinished study session opens again once your allowance resets.
Finish and see your results
After the last question, click Results. You'll see your accuracy and timing by topic and difficulty, how your score estimate and mastery changed, and the questions you missed. After a session of more than 5 questions, the AI tutor adds feedback on your mistakes and what to do next.
Frequently asked questions
No. A finished session stays in your history, because your score estimate and your plan rely on your first answers to reflect what you can do. Your next sessions move your estimate on from there. See How does the score estimate work?
You've answered every question at that difficulty on that topic, and study sessions only show questions you haven't answered. Pick another difficulty or a related topic, or review your mistakes in a Review Lab. See Do questions ever repeat?
