What is a Review Lab?

Updated

A Review Lab is a session that replays questions you got wrong or bookmarked, so you can check that you've fixed the mistake. It works like a study session, with Check, hints and explanations, but the questions are your own past ones.

Reviewing is where a lot of improvement happens: a mistake you understand and fix is one you're less likely to make on test day.

What it replays

When you start a Review Lab, you choose what to include:

  • Errors: questions whose latest answer was wrong, from study sessions, Review Labs and practice tests you've finished.
  • Bookmarks: questions you saved to your Bookmarks collection.

If you get an error right on your first Check, it won't come back in later Review Labs, though it stays in your Error Log as a record. If you miss it again, it can come back.

Start a Review Lab

  1. On Home, click Review Lab under Study plan priorities.
  2. Under Include, tick Errors, Bookmarks or both.
  3. Pick one topic: a section, domain or skill. Each shows how many questions it has to review.
  4. Click Next, choose how many questions, up to 30, and click Start Review.

You can also click Review on the Error Log to set one up for the domain or skill you've filtered to.

Why you can't pick the difficulty

A Review Lab uses questions you've already answered, so their difficulty is already set. It replays your mistakes on the topic you pick, at whatever level you missed them. For the same reason, the Error Log's difficulty filter doesn't carry over when you click Review.

To practice new questions at a level you choose, start a study session instead. See How do study sessions work?

Plan Review Labs and your own

  • Review Labs in your study plan don't run short. When you've reviewed every mistake on the topic, they top up with new questions on the same topic, so you still get the day's practice. They count toward your plan completion and, when marked Challenge, the Lock-In Challenge.
  • Review Labs you start yourself, or that the AI tutor adds, end when you run out of questions to review. You'll see "You've reviewed all available errors for this topic." Click See results to finish. They don't count toward plan completion or the challenge.

What it counts toward

Review Labs don't use your question allowance, on any plan. When you reach your weekly question limit on the Free plan, you can keep reviewing your mistakes until it resets. See Free plan limits.

Answering a question again doesn't change your mastery or your score estimate. Only the first time you answer a question counts, so your estimate reflects what you can do on questions you haven't seen. That's why the results of a Review Lab made mostly of repeats don't show a change in your estimate or mastery. New questions in a plan Review Lab count like any other first answer.

How it helps

  • Fix patterns, not just questions. Read why your answer was wrong. Many mistakes repeat across a skill.
  • Use the help. Hints, Strategy, Explain step-by-step and the AI tutor work as they do in study sessions. See Get help when you're stuck on a question.
  • Then try new questions. A Review Lab shows you've fixed the mistake on a question you've seen. A study session on the same skill tests it on new ones.

Frequently asked questions

You reviewed every question it could use for that topic. A Review Lab you start yourself, or one the AI tutor adds, ends then, even if it was set for more questions. Pick a broader topic, include Bookmarks too, or start a study session on the skill.

No. Review Labs choose by topic, not difficulty. To see your mistakes at one difficulty, filter the Error Log by difficulty and open each question to reread its explanation.

No. Your estimate counts only your first answer to each question. A Review Lab helps you learn the skill, and that shows up the next time you meet a new question on it.
