How to handle test anxiety
Updated
Some nerves before a test are normal, and they can even help you focus. A few habits keep them from taking over.
Before the test
- Practice under real conditions. Full practice tests on Aniko time each module like the SAT, so test day feels familiar.
- Sleep and eat well in the days before. Don't cram the night before.
- Know the plan for the day: what to bring, when to leave, and where to go. See What to bring to the SAT on test day.
During the test
- Breathe out slowly for a few breaths when you feel tense.
- Take it one question at a time. If a question is hard, guess, flag it and move on. There's no penalty for a wrong answer.
- Let a hard module go. A hard second module usually means the first one went well.

When it's more than nerves
If anxiety keeps you from sleeping, studying or going to school, talk to a parent and your school counselor. If you have College Board accommodations, such as extended time, set the same timing in Settings under Accessibility: Extended Time so your practice matches test day.
If you feel overwhelmed or unsafe, see Where to get help if you're struggling.
