How should I pace myself on the SAT?
Updated
You get about 71 seconds per question in Reading and Writing and about 95 seconds per question in Math. That's an average across the module, not a limit on each question. Aim to reach every question with a few minutes left for the ones you marked.
Time per question
- Reading and Writing: 27 questions in each 32-minute module.
- Math: 22 questions in each 35-minute module.
One timer counts down for the whole module, so you can spend longer on one question and less on another. Bluebook warns you when 5 minutes are left. For the full structure, see How long is the SAT, and how is it structured?
How questions are ordered
Questions come in a set order in every module, so you can plan your time:
- Reading and Writing: each module starts with Craft and Structure questions, such as Words in Context, then moves through Information and Ideas, Standard English Conventions and Expression of Ideas. Questions that test the same skill sit together and go from easier to harder, so the difficulty starts over with each new skill. Standard English Conventions questions go from easier to harder as one group.
- Math: questions go from easier to harder across the whole module, with all 4 math domains mixed in. The hardest questions come last, so keep time for them.
Skip, mark and come back
When you stop making progress on a question, pick your best guess, click Mark for Review and move on. If time is left at the end of the module, go back to the questions you marked.
Answer every question before the module ends. There's no penalty for a wrong answer, and a blank counts as wrong. Once a module ends, you can't go back to it. See How is the SAT scored? Is it curved?
Practice your pacing on Aniko
- Half tests give you 1 module per section on the SAT's timing, at the difficulty you choose. They're timing practice in about an hour.
- Full tests add the adaptive second module, so you practice pacing for the whole test.
- Mark for Review works in Aniko's practice tests as it does in Bluebook.
If you have College Board-approved extended time, set it in Settings > Accessibility: Extended Time, so your practice matches test day. See How do Aniko practice tests work?
Aniko is an independent SAT prep platform and isn't affiliated with College Board. For the official details, see College Board's SAT structure page and Bluebook testing tools.

Yes, within the same module. Use Mark for Review in Bluebook to flag it, and the question menu also shows any question you skipped. Once the module ends, you can't go back, so pick an answer for every question before time is up.
No. Words in Context questions are part of Craft and Structure, the group that opens each Reading and Writing module, and they go from easier to harder, so the first few are often quick to answer. Skip a question when you stop making progress, not because of the skill it tests: guess, mark it and come back if time is left.
